An antifouling coating for Bronze and Brass or any copper alloy surface. Chemically bonds to the copper in the alloy and provides a thin silky-smooth surface that significantly resists corrosion and makes it hard for marine life to gain adhesion.

1. 20ml seems like a small amount? PropPurr™ was developed to be environmentally friendly.

The smaller the amount of any chemical necessary to accomplish a task, the better the product is for the environment.
20ml is more than enough to coat most propellers.
Many customers will purchase PropPurr™ before traveling to their boat. The small size allows them to take the product in their luggage and avoid questions or confiscation by TSA. Even still, it is prudent to print out a copy of the PropPurr™ MSDS and place the copy near the PropPurr™ vial in luggage.

2. Does PropPurr™ harm my propeller?

No. Perhaps when you sand the the prop to prepare the surface, you are removing some material. But once PropPurr™ is applied it forms a metal/polymer barrier that significantly reduces corrosion.
Because PropPurr™ does not use any acid etchants, there is no damage to the propeller metal. Have you ever heard of a "dead metal" sounding prop? Over time when acid cleaners, copper based paints, and/or acidic primer coatings are used, portions of the propeller alloy are extracted from the prop metal grain boundaries. This makes the propeller more prone to failure when impacted. If you tap on the prop with a metal object, the sound is dull, not ringing. Think of beach sand when you walk on it. If the sand is dry (no water between the grains), your feet sink into the sand. If the sand is wet (water between the grains), your feet create a smaller impression. The sand is hard. It is much the same when an acid removes material from between the alloy grains in the metal, only much worse since instead of removing a liquid, the acid removes a solid.

3. Why is PropPurr™ considered to be a "seasonal" coating?

Most boats tested to date are hauled-out seasonally. There is more oxygen in the air than there is in water. On the hard there is a greater chance that oxygen will penetrate the polymer coating and lead to copper corrosion.
That being said, we have come back to the boat and the swirl marks from applying PropPurr™ are still apparent on the surface, even after 7-8 months on land.
We have one testimonial where PropPurr™ was used on a boat for 13 months with no growth.

4. After coating why does the surface need periodic cleaning?

Debris and marine life settles on surfaces especially when they are not moving or spinning in the water.
Propellers that are used may develop cavitation pin holes or the coating may be degraded by impacting sand and silt. Once the coating is breached, there is a greater chance for marine life to take hold or for corrosion to spread.

5. Is the coated surface easily damaged?

The PropPurr™ coated surface should be cleaned using fingers or a sponge with or without a nylon mesh (similar to that found for windows at service stations). Paper towels or cloth can also be used.
The coating is fingernail tough.
The coated surface does not rip or peel. The coating is bonded to the copper alloy on the surface and does not rely upon bonds within the coating.

6. When it is time to apply a new coating, is the PropPurr™ coated surface easy to remove?

The PropPurr™ coated surface is easily removed by a Scotch® pad, steel wool, bronze wool, sandpaper, or wire brush.
The coating will not clog the scrubbing tool.
Any surface preparation needed to create a new coppery surface would be adequate to remove the PropPurr™ coated surface.

7. How should the metal surface be prepared?

Any surface roughness will telescope through the thin PropPurr™ coated surface. And any surface roughness increases the chance for marine life to achieve a mechanical bond.
The easiest way to prepare the surface is by using an angle grinder with a wire brush. This creates a very smooth surface and removes very little propeller metal.

PropPurr™ is also a great polish for bronze ports and other coppery surfaces. The surface is satin rather than shiny. However, it should not be used on items that contact food.
